In Illinois, obtaining a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is a crucial step for those who want to operate heavy trucks and trailers on public highways. Vehicle Length Limitations

The maximum length for all vehicles on highways is 80 feet, including load. However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For instance, vehicles hauling pipes, poles, machinery, or other structural objects that cannot be quickly taken apart are exempt from this limit.

For Class 2 state and local highways, there is no overall length limit. However, the allowable wheelbase for truck tractor-semitrailer combos is 55 feet, while truck tractor-semitrailer-trailer combinations are limited to 65 feet.

On Class 3 state or local highways, the vehicle length limit is 55 feet for truck tractor-semitrailer combinations, and all other vehicle combinations must be below 60 feet. On non-designated local streets and highways, the limits are similar, with a maximum length of 55 feet for truck tractor-semitrailer combos and 60 feet for all other vehicles.

Width Requirements

The maximum width for most roads is 8 feet, except for Class 1 and 2 highways where it's 8 feet 6 inches. This ensures that large vehicles can safely navigate through Illinois' road network.

General Length Requirements

No vehicle with or without a load, excluding semitrailers, shall exceed a length of 42 feet. This rule applies to all vehicles operating on public highways in Illinois.
